Not my Beloved Mangoes (Salmonellosis)

30 August, 2012 by GAggreyMD 1 Comment

belovedmangoIn a cruel trick nature is playing on me my beloved fruit, the mango, has become associated with a foodborne illness, salmonella. The ID nerd in me wants to exclaim “how cool?!” but my true love for mango is preventing me from appreciating the infectious disease and public health nuances of this outbreak.
Not my beloved mangoes!
The mangoes have sickened 103 people in 16 US states and 22 people in Canada.
Not my beloved mangoes!
One part of me is saying salmonella braenderup? I haven’t heard that species before. Yet, I’m still thinking not my beloved mangoes.
Salmonellosis includes diarrhea with abdominal cramps and fevers within 3 days of acquiring the infection and can be life-threatening in those with weak immune systems.
Oh my heart aches!
There is good news though.  I am not and have not been one of the sick…at least not yet!
